Information on Diabetes

According to the 2007 National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 23.6 million adults and children in the U.S. have diabetes (7.8%). Another 57 million have pre-diabetes (blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes) which makes 1 out of every 4 Americans diabetic or pre-diabetic. More than 60% of nontraumatic lower-limb amputations occur in people with diabetes. The Total costs of diagnosed diabetes in the United States in 2007 was $174 billion. Factoring in the additional costs of undiagnosed diabetes, pre-diabetes, and gestational diabetes brings the total cost of diabetes in the United States in 2007 to $218 billion.
